General Hydroponics Farming

A Guide to General Hydroponics Farming

Hydroponics is a way to cultivate plants in a specialized mix of nutrients in water without the use of soil. Hydroponics has been used for centuries. Some Egyptian writings mention hydroponics, the method of growing plants in water, in the period B.C. The traditional way to grow crops is in soil. The soil anchors the plants and provides the nutrients they need to grow. However, in the 1930's scientists began conducting studies that allowed them to grow plants without water. They were able to dissolve the nutrients the plants needed in water instead.

Holland, a country that is below sea level and thus prone to floods has been using hydroponics to grow food commercially for years. Hydroponics is also popular in many parts of Western Europe. Canada is another country which uses hydroponics to grow many crops commercially. Canada is the second producer of hydroponic crops coming only after Holland.

Over the past 40 years the popularity of hydroponics has increased (even though it has been around since ancient times). Today it is more popular than ever. Many home gardeners have used hydroponics to grow crops at home (they also use traditional outdoor farming and greenhouses). The military has experimented with using hydroponics for crews of submarines. Initial experiments have also been conducted regarding using hydroponics in space.

Another place where hydroponics would be effective is in countries that are not yet developed and for small countries that lack arable land. Many countries have soil that is depleted, or too rocky, or without easy access to water -- hydroponics is a great option for these countries. Desert countries, which lack arable land, may also be able to use hydroponics. In face desert sand is great for hydroponics. Sea water, that has had the salt removed, can also be used for mixing with the nutrient solution.

NASA has begun hydroponic experiments so that plants may be grown in space. There are many advantages to hydroponics. For example, artificial sunlight makes it possible to grow hydroponic crops even during the dead of winter.

Another advantage is that hydroponics produces a high crop yield in a shorter time than traditional crops. Another advantage is that the nutrients can be re-used and this decreases pollution. Hydroponics is good for the environment because weed killers and pesticides are not necessary.

Many people wonder if the quality of the food produced is high quality. Many studies have taken place to determine the quality of hydroponic produce. Some reports have determined that the vitamin and mineral content of food that is hydroponically grown is actually superior to food grown by traditional farming methods. Anyone can use hydroponics to grow food although it does require some skill and a lot of patience. The best thing to do is start simply.

You will need to learn the light, temperature, and CO2 levels that are ideal. You will also need to make an initial investment in equipment. The hydroponic industry is growing rapidly so prices on much of the equipment are coming down. There is a simple system using buckets that is quite low cost and very effective. The system using buckets is easy to set up and involves very little maintenance.
