A Guide to General Hydroponics
The study of general hydroponics has been around for years. As a matter of fact, the technique of growing this
in water without soil has been used for hundreds of years. General hydroponic growing has been found in the
floating gardens of China and the Aztecs, the gardens of Babylon, and has even been recorded in Egyptian
hieroglyphics.
In modern times scientists have made remarkable progress in the field of general hydroponics. In fact, many
scientists and horticulturists have conducted studies of many of the methods related to general hydroponics.
General hydroponics has become increasingly useful in many parts of the world. During World War II hydroponics was
used to grow fresh fruit and vegetables for the military troops stationed in Pacific Islands that were non
arable.
General hydroponics ahs become more popular lately for commercial growers. They are always interested in ways to
grow food quicker and cheaper. Many farmers using traditional soil farming are also become attracted to general
hydroponics. Because of its desert climate Israel has been working to develop advanced hydroponic techniques. These
techniques have been marketed to the country of Nicaragua which has used hydroponics to sell peppers
internationally.
Arizona, a desert state, has the largest hydroponic facility in the world. In 2005 they grew and sold over one
hundred million pounds of tomatoes. Using the technique of general hydroponics, instead of a traditional soil
farming method, usually gives a higher yield. It is also great for areas in the world where it is not possible to
grow crops in the soil.
General hydroponics also eliminates the need for insecticides and pesticides and other chemicals which make it
great for the environment. The nutrients needed for general hydroponics vary from crop to crop. Different crops
require different nutrients. The nutrients required also vary depending on which part of the growing cycle the
plant is in. Various combinations of nutrients at each stage of the plants life can be tried.
Basically, general hydroponics requires water with ionic and inorganic nutrients dissolved in. Some of these
nutrients are potassium nitrate, potassium sulphate, calcium nitrate, and magnesium sulfate. The crop yield of
general hydroponics is quite high because there are not problems with bugs and soil.
The growth of the plant is very dependent of the light and the levels of carbon dioxide. One way to increase
crop yield is to enrich the CO2 environment in the greenhouse. You can also increase growth by increasing the light
which the plants receive.
